As well as the core modules, you may also have the opportunity to study a number of option modules in your second and third year. Option modules will not be pre-selected for you. We provide examples of option modules. The availability of specific option modules may vary from year to year. The offer of an option will be subject to a minimum number of students choosing the module to ensure the appropriate student experience. The offer of option modules may also be affected by staff availability. It means we cannot guarantee the availability of a particular optional module. However, we will ensure you have a choice of option modules.
We employ a blended approach to your learning, combining theory and practice in lectures, seminars, practical sessions, labs, workshops and tutorials.
Seminars and tutorials in smaller groups will enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures and other sessions. As a BASRaT accredited course, our group teaching for practical learning is delivered in a 1:20 ratio and our on site clinic is a 1:10 ratio offering you the best small group learning opportunities. In addition, you will meet with your personal academic tutor on a regular basis.
All courses are informed by the University’s Learning and Teaching Strategy 2015-2022.
Your overall workload typically consists of 10-14 contact hours per week. You will also undertake 15-20 hours of independent learning and assessment related activity each week.

The course provides you with opportunities to test your understanding of the subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count towards your final mark. Practical sessions will also allow students to receive feedback on their engagement and progress throughout the course.
There is a formal or 'summative' assessment at the end of each module. Assessment methods may include written examinations, presentations, practical treatment sessions and a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, and your final year major project. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark.
The majority of our modules are assessed using 2 elements, Observer Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) or Observed Structured Practical Examinations (OSPE,) and a portfolio workbook element where you will evidence on a regular basis your acquisition of key practical skills and clinical competency. These assessment elements carry a 50% weighting, and all elements have to be passed to pass the module.
