Allows for a seven or 14 calendar day coursework extension or postponement of an exam/time-constrained assessment for short-term, unexpected difficulties that impact your ability to complete an assessment(s), and for which you have supporting evidence.

For coursework, the maximum extension through the exceptional circumstances process is 14 calendar days from your original deadline in total.

It can only be used for individual assessment deadlines/dates. You cannot use it to extend/postpone a group work single group assessment deadline/date. If you cannot meet the group deadline, you must contact your tutor to discuss support (before the deadline).

Key information about evidence-based extensions

  • For your request to be approved, it must be for an acceptable reason. Check the Eligibility Criteria and Acceptable Types of Supporting Evidence.

  • You MUST submit your evidence with your application. If the University already has the evidence you want used for your request, you must confirm this in the request form.

  • You can submit an evidence-based extension request up to 14 calendar days before your deadline, and no later than seven days afterwards.

  • Your request will normally be considered by your course team, so you should normally receive a decision within three working days. In some cases your request might be referred to the Faculty Panel (e.g. if you submit the form late but give a reason for lateness) and if so you will receive a decision within 21 days of submitting your form.

  • If approved, you must submit your coursework or complete your TCA/exam on the new date. Late submissions will incur penalties, and missing assessments will result in a score of 0%.

  • The timeframe for your provisional mark and feedback will be based on the extended/new deadline.
  • If you have already had a seven day coursework extension through self-certification, an evidence-based extension request can only provide you with a further seven calendar days (14 calendar days in total from your original deadline). If you still need more time, you should contact your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) or Course Director to discuss your options, for example whether you are eligible for a Temporary Learning Agreement (TLA).

If you have either a Temporary Learning Agreement (TLA) or Learning and Placement Support Plan (LSP) in place:

  • You cannot use Exceptional Circumstances to request a further extension, postponement or deferral to an assessment already delayed using either a TLA or LSP.
  • If you require an extension/postponement for the same reason your TLA or LSP was put in place, please contact your PAT and/or Course Director to discuss if (and if so, how) you can be supported for that assessment through your existing plan.

Top tips for using the online forms

  • You cannot save for later: Have everything ready before you begin.
  • Information needed:
    • Student ID
    • Module and assessment details from Blackboard
    • Evidence for extensions/impaired performance requests. Without it, requests are declined.
  • Combined Honours Students: Include all assessments for both subjects in one request, or you’ll exhaust your available requests.
  • After submission: At the end save a copy of your form and look out for a confirmation email at your University/Partner Institution email address.
  • Continue to work on your coursework: If you apply for an extension to your coursework, or to postpone or re-take an exam/time-constrained assessment, please do not assume it will automatically be approved. While you wait for a decision, submit your coursework as soon as you are able.

Evidence-based Exceptional Circumstances Form

Please ensure you complete the right form for your Faculty If you are not sure which Faculty and School your course sits in, you can check this in your MyRecord Course Details.

Students studying at a partner institution need to make an exceptional circumstances request using the forms available from their Course Administrative team within their Partner Institution.

If you have questions about extensions or postponements under the exceptional circumstances procedure, discuss them with your PAT, Course Director, or Course Administrative Team.
