Understanding Data

When you have found the data you are looking for, you need to be able to evaluate it and discuss it appropriately. Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Can I trust the data? Who has published it? What is their purpose?

  2. Do I trust the sample size? Is the data comprehensive or partial? Are there limitations?

  3. Do I know how the data was collected and was it collected ethically?

  4. When was it collected? Is it timebound?

  5. Can I use the data? Does the data have any restrictions on reuse?
