At CCCU, we believe that everyone deserves to go to university. That’s why we are firm supporters of care leavers. Find out what financial help is available to you.

What do you get?

You can receive up to £4,800, which amounts over four years of study (£1,200 per academic year, pro rata if you are studying part-time).

This can include either a foundation year or PGCE. However, this doesn’t include apprenticeships.

Who is this for?

This is available to care leavers who are on an undergraduate or PGCE course. You must:

  • be under 25 years of age
  • be in care or a care leaver
  • be in the UK, with the UK as your main residence
  • have been, or are, looked after under a Care Order when age 16 for at least 13 weeks OR
  • be recognised by the Foyer Federation or have otherwise been homeless
  • have an annual household income of £25,000 or less
  • have course fees that are more than £6,355 (full-time) or £4,765 (part-time)
  • not receive other financial support from CCCU, including the CCCU Grant (other than during a repeat year of study)
  • be able to provide proof of the above if asked. This is usually done through your local authority.

For support please contact our Student Wellbeing team.

How do you apply?

On your UCAS application, you'll be able to declare your care leaver status. From this, our Student Wellbeing team will contact you to help verify your status and eligibility for the application.

Once your status and eligibility are confirmed, you will then be recommended for the bursary payment by our Student Wellbeing team.

When will you be paid?

You will be paid in three instalments over the course of the academic year.

If you live in our University-owned accommodation, 50% of the bursary will be automatically allocated towards the cost of your accommodation.

There is also the option to allocate the total amount towards your accommodation payment. Once your start CCCU, you will be contacted by the student fees team regarding this option.

What do you need to know?

This award is not paid during repeat years of study. However, if you are repeating a year then you may be eligible for the CCCU Grant instead.
