    How you’ll learn

Building an inclusive learning community is a key priority on this course. We have inclusivity, accessibility, and the student experience at the heart of our course design and have designed the curriculum to ensure it is relevant, engaging, and reflects the interests and background of our students.

A main priority is for students to feel engaged in teaching, therefore you will experience a variety of learning and teaching techniques, which will vary from module to module. These may include lectures, seminars, online sessions, group work, practical-based workshops, role-plays, and research projects, as well as guided and independent study.

Lectures use real-life case studies to help you explore key areas of clinical psychology and understand the challenges people face at different stages of life. You’ll learn how to look at these issues from different psychological perspectives and think about them in a clear, thoughtful, and critical way. Through tutor-led discussions and group activities, you’ll dive into current debates about clinical psychology and gain a better understanding of how social and personal factors shape human behaviour and interaction.

Full-time students will normally attend teaching two days per week.

The majority of teaching will take place in Canterbury. However, teaching may occasionally take place at the Salomons Institute in Tunbridge Wells.

Independent study will help you build important skills like finding, understanding, and organising information from different sources (like books, journals, or the internet). It also gives you the chance to take charge of your own learning and develop useful study skills.

As a guide, we recommend you dedicate around 35 to 40 hours per week to your studies for full-time students. This includes all independent and directed study (including on campus sessions) as well as assessment planning and preparation.

You’ll be given helpful materials and extra resources to support your independent study. These might include things like articles to read, videos to watch, podcasts to listen to, or reflective activities to try. They’re designed to help you explore the topic before the session and to build a deeper understanding during your own study time.

The course is taught by experienced professionals, including university researchers, qualified clinical psychologists, and mental health practitioners who work in the NHS, voluntary services, and at the Salomons Institute for Applied Psychology. This means you will learn from experts with real-world experience and have the chance to talk with clinicians about their work and what it is like to work in clinical settings.

In terms of support, you will be assigned a personal tutor who will also double as your mentor. This person will be your first port of call and will be available throughout your time with us. We also have dedicated psychology technicians, Learning Skills Hub, Careers and Enterprise Hub, Student Support Advisers, Student Disability Team, Mental Wellbeing Team, and Prayer and faith support.

When you start your independent research project, you will get one-to-one support from an experienced supervisor who will guide you through the process, help you shape your ideas, and support you every step of the way. It is a great chance to research a topic you are passionate about with expert advice by your side.

You will benefit from specialised teaching from qualified clinical practitioners and researchers, providing an in-depth knowledge of the field that will serve as a stepping stone towards a rewarding career in clinical psychology or mental health.
