Poppy is a current third year Law with History student and has taken part in some fantastic opportunities during her time at CCCU. Read Poppy’s top five reasons why she loves studying Law with History at CCCU.

1. Vienna Moot Trip

As part of my law degree, I took part in the 31st Willem C. Vis Moot. We were the first ever CCCU team to attend, which was really exciting.

On the trip, our team took part in several mooting rounds and met other law students from around the world. We also got to go on UN tours and explore the beautiful city of Vienna.

Before the trip, our team practised at University to make sure that we were fully prepared for the trip. We participated in competitions on campus and took part in Pre-Moots in London.

2. CLOCK

CCCU provides Law students the unique experience to be involved in The Community Legal Outreach Collaboration Keele (CLOCK). This is where you can get involved in the administration of justice, by volunteering as a Community Legal Companion at the local law courts in Canterbury.

I became a CLOCK companion in my second year. I’m now a senior and committee member for this year. It’s been so beneficial as it’s enabled me to develop my legal skills, as well as helping the local community.

I hope to use these skills in my future jobs after I graduate. Through this volunteering, I’ve also become a volunteer at SATEDA, a domestic abuse charity in Kent, Swale, and Medway. Through this role, I’m learning to become a better court companion and get greater awareness of mental health struggles. The extra experience is great for CVs and a talking point in interviews and applications.

3. Law dinners

Each year the Law department hosts an annual law dinner, where students from across all years are invited, along with external guests and a guest speaker. It’s hosted in Canterbury Cathedral Lodge, on the Canterbury Cathedral grounds, and the evening involves a three-course meal, as well as hearing from inspirational speakers.

All three law dinners I attended were a fantastic experience for networking with local solicitors and barristers and discussing routes to qualify. From these dinners, I was able to network and gain work experience in criminal and medical law.

These were great events to learn about other opportunities such as finding out about vacation schemes in Kent and speaking to current trainees about training contracts.

4. History

As a Law with History LLB student, my history modules have strengthened my legal studies. I’ve had opportunities to produce essay-style Parliamentary reports and articles whilst exploring modules on classic civilisation, medieval Europe, and modern day.

By doing a law degree with another subject, I could still explore a topic I enjoyed at secondary school and transfer these skills of research and source analysis into the legal profession.

5. Women in Law

I became a Women in Law Kent member through one of the several networking events created by CCCU. Women in Law Kent is a non-profit organisation who empower, support, and connect women who work, or aspire to work, in the legal profession. They help to organise opportunities available to their members and the wider community, such as workshops, online courses, networking events, and social activities.

Women in Law Kent has strong links to CCCU and is an amazing community of women in various legal roles in Kent. I’m so grateful for all their support through competitions and my studies.
