Social media for researchers

Your digital identity

One of the JISC digital capabilities for researchers is to ‘Develop and project a positive digital identity or identities as a researcher’. Part of this is managing your online reputation. Managing your online reputation is important because anyone, your employers, potential employers, colleagues, friends and family can see what you’ve been doing online. If we do something immoral, unpleasant or inappropriate this can affect our relationships and even our employment prospects or current job situations. Another of the digital capabilities in the JISC Researcher Profile is ‘Promoting the values of scholarship in digital settings’. We should try to promote the values of scholarship however and wherever we are working, whether that’s online or face to face. These values are relevant and important in the digital world. As researchers, the values of scholarship and whether we promote them or not, reflect on us and how we are, or could be, viewed in the digital world – they should be part of our digital identity. Explore the interactive graphic below to discover more:

Wellbeing

It’s really important to look after our own and others’ health and wellbeing when using social media. Overuse, or misuse, of social media can affect our lives on- and offline. It is quite easy for social media to take over people’s lives, but using it sensibly can be beneficial. The key is that you should be in control of your social media, rather than it controlling you.
