Victorian Women at the Seaside

In 2014 The International Centre for Victorian Women Writers organised a series of exhibitions at venues around Kent.

Victorian women at the seaside

Based on the theme of Victorian women at the seaside, the exhibitions narrated the visit of a young woman and her modishly dressed husband who are visiting the coast for the first time.

Considering how they got there, where they might have stayed, what they can eat and what they might do, the exhibitions featured a wealth of resources from local archives which not only showed the attractions on offer, but also considered the importance of local women to the blossoming tourist trade.

  • Birchington Library - 28 July - 7 August 2014
  • Deal Library - 8 August - 4 September 2014
  • Augustine House Library, Canterbury - 5 September - 30 September 2014
  • Folkestone Library - 1 October - 31 October 2014

Members of the public were invited to share local resources, tales of forgotten female ancestors or other Victorian gems that deserved to see the light of day with the ICVWW.

Supported by Kent Libraries, Registration and Archives.
