Find out about our Hydra Suite, our innovative and immersive simulation facility.
Hydra is a unique and innovative training concept where students experience simulated events. This immersive experience allows students to practise essential skills in real-time as they solve a practical dilemma.
Created in response to the murder of Stephen Lawrence, Hydra was formed for the emergency services to practise their skills during critical incidents without the repercussions from a real-life event.
From quick decision-making to effective communication within a team, students get to work through a Hydra event before having the chance to evaluate their performance.
During the simulation exercise, decision logs are stored within Hydra, which can then be used by students to reflect and evaluate on their decisions during the time-pressured event. This gives them the chance to consider other possibilities and, ultimately, improve their performance.
What’s more, each event is written by professionals, ensuring every element reflects real-life experiences.
Each facilitator is also specifically trained to use Hydra. This means that students benefit from well-planned events that entail complex methodologies, processes, and techniques.
The Hydra Suite includes:
We are one of a few universities within the U.K. that have a Hydra Suite. Students studying subjects such as policing, criminal investigation, social work, education, psychology, forensic investigation, and law can get involved with Hydra.
What's more, plans are under way to expand Hydra simulation into other fields of study.
Collaboration: Hydra simulations involve team-based scenarios, allowing students to work together and learn from each other, much like in a real-world setting, which helps develop communication and teamwork skills.
Increased understanding: Immersive learning through simulation often leads to higher engagement compared to traditional lecture-based learning, as students are actively involved in the learning process. At CCCU, we prioritise practical learning, enabling our students to become fully immersed in real-world settings.
Exposure to realistic stress conditions: Students experience how they might react under pressure in safe, controlled environments. This experience helps to build resilience and manage stress, especially during high-stakes scenarios.
Immediate feedback and reflection: Hydra includes debriefs and feedback sessions, allowing students to reflect on their decisions, understand consequences, and identify areas for improvement.
