Students will explore the strategies used by women writers to be heard and the challenges they faced.
In this one-hour masterclass with an academic and/or ambassadors, students will develop their understanding of the strategies used by women writers to be heard and the challenges they faced in achieving patronage, print publication, and recognition. Through the lens of Victorian fiction (Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s Lady Audley’s Secret), they will be invited to consider the challenges raised in both historic and contemporary culture through an exploration of the relationship between literature, authority, taste and wider cultural and socio-political contexts (including literary censure and censorship).
