In this interactive two-hour workshop students will develop their understanding of forces including surface tension.

In this interactive two-hour workshop with an academic and/or postgraduate ambassadors, students will develop their understanding of forces including surface tension. Students will experiment will a range of (pre-made) paper boat designs to understand how the addition of a household chemical to the water’s surface impacts the surface tension and propels the boat using the tension of water molecules instead of electricity or fuels.

The complexity of the explanation and content of this workshop is adapted to ensure age/stage appropriate delivery.

For key stage 2 students this will include. Key Stage 3-4 students will deepen their understanding of the action of pressure in fluids and the relationship between force and acceleration. Students in Key Stage 5 will develop their understanding of the factors that impact the motions of objects on and through fluids, including how to calculate surface energy density, and the relationship between surface tension and buoyancy.
