Canterbury Christ Church University and the Curzon Canterbury Westgate cinema are joining together to launch an exciting new film club in Canterbury this autumn.

The educational collaboration is the first of its kind in England and will be officially launched in September. Over a ten-month period, there will be a fortnightly Monday evening film club with an academic from the University leading a talk and discussion on the film being shown.

It is an exciting initiative for both parties, with the Curzon Canterbury Westgate cementing its ethos as a ‘community’ hub. Curzon Canterbury Westgate Manager Emily Morgan said: “We’ve had an amazing time working alongside the University to build this programme of events. The talks have, and will, add excitement and interest to our sessions, and we’re grateful to all the knowledgeable and entertaining speakers who have agreed to lend us - and our club attendees - their expertise. We look forward to seeing our relationship with the University blossom, and welcoming Canterbury residents into our Film Club.”

This new film club will expand on the work that academics from the University’s School of Creative Arts and Industries and the School of Humanities and Educational Studies have already been doing to support the cinema’s current Film Club, which has seen them introduce films to the public which relates to their own research expertise. Films have included the Andrew Haigh’s 2011 ‘Weekend’ to Powell and Pressburger’s ‘A Canterbury Tale’.

Senior Lecturer in Film and TV in the School of Creative Arts and Industries, Jane Milton, added: “For many years the University has been at the forefront of teaching film production and supporting students to gain the skills needed to forge successful careers in the industry. So, we’re delighted to expand our expertise and build on our relationship with the staff at Curzon Canterbury Westgate, now in its 10th year, to deliver an exciting new opportunity for all film fans. It’s a great opportunity for our University colleagues to share their passion and work with the community.”

The first Film Club will be on Monday 23 September, 6pm with Canterbury Christ Church University Senior Lecturer in Creative and Professional Writing Peggy Riley and the film will be Silver Linings Playbook 6pm.
