Britney is a second year Forensic Investigation student and has taken part in some fantastic opportunities during her time at Canterbury Christ Church University.

Read Britney’s top five reasons why she loves studying Forensic Investigation at CCCU.

1. The practical experience

CCCU’s Forensic Investigation degree allows us to experience a practical scenario of what it would be like to attend a crime scene.

I began with a foundation year, which means that I now have three years' experience that I’ve learned from my course. From this, I’m much more confident when it comes to tackling practical sessions in a more confident and professional manner.

Last year we got to take part in a CAVEX Cavalier Emergency Exercise, which was a simulated emergency at Chatham Historic Dockyard. Here, I was able to practise everything that I’ve learned, and it was a great day to collaborate and network with other students and professionals.

2. The laboratory experience

From day one of our degree, we work in the laboratory. The University prioritises learning practical skills, including lab skills, which means that we get a lot of lab time.

We’re able to gain experience in procedures and expand our knowledge on how to examine best hairs, fibres, and body fluids that are presented on exhibits we’re given.

3.  The help and support from academics

The help and support we receive from academics is fantastic. The teachers genuinely care for their students and it shows. Whether it’s related to assignments or your mental health, the lecturers are always willing to lend an ear if you’re struggling with your course or for anything else.

We are close to our lecturers – there’s a mutual respect between us, even though we’re students. It’s not like school. We can approach our teachers with anything and we always feel supported. And if they can’t help then we have access to the University’s support services.

4. Career opportunities

The teachers are always posting on our group chat about any opportunities that come up within the Forensic field. They often send a link with the requirements and will help us with the application if we’re interested in the job role.

We have access to Unitemps, CCCU’s on-campus work agency. Here, we can find part-time work, volunteering, and internships. There’s always some opportunity for us to gain experience somewhere other than on our course.

The Career and Enterprise Hub also has a lot going on for students. Whether you need 1:1 help with CV writing or want to join a workshop series about how to start your own business, there’s something to get involved in.

5. The content

The course content has definitely far exceeded my expectations. Going into this course I already had an interest in the subject, but the knowledge I’ve gained since starting this degree has only strengthened my passion for the subject.

There are a range of different module options to choose from in year 2 and year 3, which helps you to discover the specific areas you’re really interested in.
