Hi, my name’s Katie and I’m a first year student studying Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime at Canterbury Christ Church University.

I’ve had so many great experiences since starting uni in September. Here are my top five experiences on my Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime course since becoming a student at CCCU.

1. The people I've met

When I applied for Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime at CCCU, I didn’t know anybody else who shared similar interests. Since beginning the course, I’ve met a range of amazing people, both students and staff who share the same energy into the course as myself.

Studying Counter Terrorism has also allowed me to connect with a range of students across other policing courses too, who are able to provide valuable input into your learning from other policing perspectives.

What’s more, the lecturers are inspirational to learn from. Their backgrounds within policing are remarkable, and they’re able to apply first hand valuable experience into your learning.

2. A practical course

Being that Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime are roles that require a range of abilities, CCCU provides learning in a range of formats. We’ve had the opportunity to take part within live Counter Terrorism practicals that require you to apply your learnt knowledge.

CCCU consists of facilities that make these practicals feel real life, such as the Hydra Suite. The facilities include simulation rooms for police custody, cells, and interview rooms.

These practicals also involve other policing students from different courses. This enables us all to collaborate and learn from a wider policing scope.

3. Opportunities for students

There are a wide range of opportunities that students can get involved in during their studies. CCCU are really supportive in attempting to excel the learning of students, providing extra-curricular activities such as:

  • volunteering for victim support
  • internships working alongside lecturers in their research
  • becoming student representatives.

All the opportunities provided by CCCU are supportive of your studies and enhances your CV for future career opportunities.

4. Support available

Throughout your studies, you’ll have support provided by all lecturers regarding your work. Beginning university can be a dauting experience, but CCCU provides all the support required.

You’ll have access to your own Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) who has vast experience in your field of study. My PAT works on a global basis within his policing role, but always manages to make himself available to support my studies, whilst inspiring me from another country!

Additionally, lecturers always make themselves accessible to you, via email, teams calls, or face to face support if required, and are both heavily experienced in policing and incredibly approachable.

You’ll also have access to wider student support services as a CCCU student. Whether you need support with finances, wellbeing, or study skills, Support Support will have you covered.

5. The future

My first year of studying Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime has been packed with interesting lectures, exciting experiences, and inspiring people.

The knowledge gained from my studies have opened plenty of new interests and future career pathways that I wasn’t aware of previously.

I’m particularly looking forward to going on fully-funded trips to the Netherlands and Ireland with the policing team to enhance my global policing experience. There are so many opportunities to be introduced to through this course, which CCCU continues to provide.
