We want everybody to have a positive experience using our libraries. We do not charge fines on overdue items, except for document delivery items. Instead, if you have an overdue item, your account will be suspended. This means you will not be able to take out any other items until you have returned the overdue item. We do not want to disadvantage anyone, but we hope this acts as an incentive for borrowers to return items on time, so that they are accessible to all.

Unless another user has requested your loan, all 4-week and 7-day loans will automatically renew. You can only be late returning an item if:

  • you keep a 4-week or 7-day item beyond the due date, that’s been reserved by somebody else.
  • you keep a non-renewable item, like a thesis, past the time its due.
  • you keep an item after you have left the University.

If an item is still overdue after 14 days it is considered lost. There will be a charge for replacing the item. You will receive your invoice by email.

Your library account will be suspended if:

  • you have an overdue loan
  • you have unpaid fines on document delivery items of £10 or more
  • You have lost or damaged replacement costs on your account

This means you cannot borrow any additional items from the library, but you will still be able to access online resources. Once you return any overdue items and your unpaid fines are cleared, you will be able to continue borrowing.

If you think you have lost or damaged an item you have borrowed, contact us as soon as possible. We will note on your library account that the item has been lost or damaged and, if appropriate, search the shelves for the item.

If the item is not found, a charge for the cost of replacement will be added to your library account. You will receive your invoice by email. If the item is lost in the post, it is your responsibility to arrange the recovery of the costs from the courier. Please note that you cannot buy replacement items yourself.

You can pay for lost items:

  • at the library point at Canterbury
  • at our chip and pin enabled self-service machines
  • via the online payment system. We will apply the payment to your Library account by 12:00 noon the next working day.

Online payment system

All library users can make use of our online payment system on the University Finance store. If it's your first time using the Finance store you will need to create an account during the payment process. For students and staff this account is separate from your main University IT account. Password details will not change as you regularly update your IT password. Please enter the total amount payable as shown on the bill supplied by Library and Learning Resources.

If you think there is an item on your account that should not be there, please contact us and let us know. We will mark the item on your account and conduct checks. We will also ask you to check at home, work or anywhere you might use the books.

If the book is not found after four weeks, we treat the item as a lost item.
