The University has a long history in developing outstanding teachers and was founded in 1962 as a teacher training college. The School has considerable experience in training teachers and education professionals, working within a dynamic partnership involving over 400 schools, colleges, and settings.
Our School comprises the two directorates of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) and Professional Learning.
We are proud to deliver education, training, and development to over 1700 student teachers each year, working in partnership with over 600 settings in our region and beyond.

Accreditation
We are accredited by the Department of Education (DfE) to deliver initial teacher training courses leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) from 2024.
Our Professional Learning directorate provides opportunities in childhood studies at the University and in collaboration with partner colleges in our region. We also offer highly regarded accredited specialism at postgraduate level, such as Specialist Teaching and Assessment for Dyslexia, and the National Award for Special Educational Needs.
