Are you thinking about becoming a teacher? We offer a number of routes into teaching at Canterbury Christ Church University.

Routes into teaching

Undergraduate

If you don't already have a degree, you can apply for our undergraduate teaching course - BA (Hons) Primary Education - which leads to recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in three years.

If you'd like to study BA (Hons) Primary Education, apply through the UCAS website in the same way you would apply for any other undergraduate course.

Postgraduate

Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

If you already have a first degree, we offer routes in primary, secondary, and further education, allowing you to qualify as a teacher in one year.

Once you’ve chosen the right course for you, you can find step-by-step information on completing your application on the Get into Teaching website.

Applications for postgraduate teacher training courses at Canterbury Christ Church University can be completed and submitted via the GOV.uk postgraduate teacher training website. In your application you'll be asked to give details of your qualifications, write a personal statement, and provide details for two referees. Try to ensure your personal statement expresses your passion for teaching and your preferred phase or subject area. Your completed application will then be reviewed by the university. If shortlisted, you will be invited to attend a PGCE interview.

All shortlisted applicants will be offered an online interview held via Microsoft Teams. Your interview will be with a university tutor from your phase/subject, and normally a mentor from one of our partnership schools. For full information see our remote interviews webpage.

This course offers a route to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status, and you can apply directly to your preferred partner college. Once you've been offered a place by the college, you'll then need to apply to us separately.

International Qualified Teacher Status - iQTS

Canterbury Christ Church University is proud to have been part of the iQTS pilot in collaboration with the Department for Education since its inception in 2022. Since then, we have built on this success to develop an internationally recognised course which enables you to train where you live and work, with no need to visit the UK.

Our course is for those who are new to teaching or in-service teachers who are keen to gain the iQTS professional qualification which meets the same high standards of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in England. QTS is also awarded on successful completion for trainees who want to teach in England in the future.
