Sport and Exercise Psychology with the Foundation Year provide a gateway to higher education for those who have not attained sufficient tariff points to enter a three-year degree courses.  The additional year offers students a supportive, motivational environment in which to acquire and develop the self-confidence, knowledge, skills and understanding for further study.

The Foundation Year develops a grounding in a range of key areas aligned with success including developing knowledge of scientific principles, practical skill development in this field, and the application of science to sport.

Sport and Exercise Psychology is part of a well-established suite of sport-related programmes at Canterbury Christ Church University with sport related academic courses being successfully delivered for over 35 years, making us one of the longest standing sport and exercise science providers in the UK.

Sport and Exercise Psychology with Foundation Year you will develop a specific and generic knowledge and skills that will make you a valuable asset to any employer. The degree programme will qualify you for a range of careers related to sport, exercise and physical activity. It also opens up routes into teaching, and further study to Masters level and beyond. This programme is a Combined Honours programme and you will need to identify another subject to study alongside Sport & Exercise Psychology, once you have completed the Foundation Year.

After a successful career in the Parachute Regiment, a former mature student was the first person to paraglide from John O’Groats to Dover in aid of the charity Help for Heroes.

Students on a foundation year course will undertake 120 credits of generic core modules as follows:

  • Scientific Skills in Sport and Exercise 1
  • Scientific Skills in Sport and Exercise 2
  • Social and Psychological Aspects of Sport and Exercise
  • Study Skills
  • Biological Concepts
  • Physical Laws of the Natural World

The core modules offer key training in higher education study for science-based programmes and University level skills, namely:

  • Academic Writing and Study Skills
  • Theoretical and Practical Skills in Scientific Method
  • Personal and Career Development

Year 0 - Foundation Year

All modules are core modules.

Biological Concepts

The module introduces the variety of living organisms and their classification. This covers the key concepts of species relatedness and of evolution. Structure, ultrastructure and biochemistry of cells and of cell division are covered, as is the structure of DNA and its role in protein synthesis. Genetics and reproduction are covered and students are introduced to molecular genetics. Functional aspects of plant and animal bodies, such as homeostasis, transport, support and locomotion are also covered.

Physical Laws of the Natural World

This module starting with the realisation that physics is the study of the behaviour of light and matter in the natural world, students will be introduced to the way in which physics can be studied. This leads to the examination of matter and how it moves when subjected to an external force. Students will then learn of the conservation laws that govern most natural processes, developing a clearer understanding of energy, momentum and electric charge. Finally, they will examine the properties of sound waves and of light, using the ray model and wave model of light to explain its different characteristics.

Scientific Skills in Sport and Exercise 1

This module will investigate key scientific concepts that need to be considered when investigating sport from a scientific perspective.  Fundamental components will be demonstrated and explored such as the ethics of studying human participants, reliability and validity of measurement, pre assessment procedures, health and safety, and calibration of equipment.  These factors will all be contextualised as key requirements in recording and analysing data to enhance knowledge and understanding.

Scientific Skills in Sport and Exercise 2

This module will build Scientific Skills in Sport and Exercise 1, to enhance further the students’ scientific skills.  This module will consider the complex nature of science, and how the disciplines associated with the scientific study of sport can interact to enhance knowledge and problem solve.  Problems will be considered from across the range of sport and exercise science disciplines with demonstrations of how research can be enhanced through inter/multi-disciplinary investigation. 

Social and Psychological Aspects of Sport and Exercise

This module will explore the application of scientific principles in relation to social and psychological aspects of sport and exercise.  Students will be introduced to stratified dimensions of society which could include social class, social mobility, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, age and (dis) ability.  The module will also introduce how we can investigate the nature of individual behaviour and group dynamics related to sport and exercise psychology.

Study Skills

This module will revise and extend basic mathematical, presentation and research skills in preparation for future degree-level study. Students will also be shown how to access and find relevant, reliable and current scientific information and when to apply and cite such information. Students will then be able to take these skills and to apply and develop them as they undertake a directed research project.

Successful completion of the Foundation Year will lead to enrolment on the Sport and Exercise Psychology programme, this is a Combined Honours programmen and you will need to identify another subject to study alongside Sport & Exercise Psychology.

This programmes open up routes into teaching, through the PGCE, and prepares you for further postgraduate study at all levels through to PhD. It also qualifies you for roles in sport, physical activity and health administration and research, health and fitness publishing, as well as the ever-expanding leisure industry.

In addition, it provides an excellent foundation for careers in the public sector, including the medical professions (cardiac rehabilitation, physiotherapy, health promotion and medical sales), whilst both the armed and police forces look favourably upon our graduates.

Wherever your career aspirations lie, a successfully completed Sport and Exercise Psychology degree will equip you with both the specific and generic knowledge and skills that may provide that essential ‘edge’ when trying to make a mark in today’s increasingly competitive job and postgraduate market.

Course specific costs

Composition of the course

Each 20 credit taught module has a standard 30-50 hours of student contact. This will typically include lectures, seminars, practical work, labs, workshops, tutorials and feedback on assignments. You are also expected to engage in 150-170 hours of self-directed study per taught module. Contact takes place in face-to-face and online environments, and learning and teaching methods are continually informed by student feedback.

You will have access to specific resources including online study skills materials and our laboratories, which include an eye tracker, brain imaging equipment (EEG), and other sport/exercise related equipment (treadmills and weights, for example). In addition to curricular activity, we strongly encourage volunteering and personal development, and will help you connect with worthwhile charities and organisations.

Academic input

There are currently approximately 33 experienced staff who teach / deliver the course. In January 2016 there was one professor, four readers, four principal lecturers, 10 senior lecturers, seven university instructors (half time academic), three postgraduate students, and one senior lab technician, supported by three other technical staff. The Section is supported by a professional services team comprising nine specialist roles. The consultancy unit, SportsLab, also has a manager and access to a number of experienced sport performance consultants.

You will be assessed through a range of methods, including individual and group presentations, case studies, essays, scientific reports and examinations. These are planned to take account of two inter­dependent aspects:

  • The acquisition of relevant theory and principles
  • The development of both academic and practical skills.

Accordingly, assessment procedures will take account of not only your newly acquired knowledge and skills, but also the process of developing skills and the ability to apply such knowledge and skills in the world of work.

Specialist facilities

As a student within the Section of Sport and Exercise Sciences, you will have access to our dedicated laboratories and equipment including treadmills, weights, light gates and body composition apparatus used to measure and assess sport and exercise performance. You will also have the opportunity to work within our consultancy unit SportsLab, through which we work with professional athletes, conducting performance related tests and use our expertise to help athletes boost their performance either as an individual or a team. Finally, our academic tutors, technicians, administrators and support team together aim to make a positive difference to the student experience.

Our course, research and consultancy work are continually developed with consideration of advances and relevant stakeholder needs within the wider health and fitness industry.

Selected staff are accredited by or registered with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), the British Psychological Society (BPS), the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and/or the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Many members of the teaching staff hold coaching qualifications awarded by a range of national governing bodies.

  • You do not need to have a significant prior knowledge of Science-related subjects but should be motivated to study the subject Sport and Exercise Psychology with Foundation Year. We do, however, require a GCSE C or above in Mathematics, or equivalent (including a GCSE in Statistics).
