Overview

The PGCE SCITT (Primary Education) and PGCE SCITT (Secondary Education) course is run for cohorts of students recruited by SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) organisations working with Canterbury Christ Church University. We are the current partner of Bromley Schools’ Collegiate. Schools include:

    • Ashton on Mersey School
    • Orpington Primary
    • Orpington Secondary.

If you are looking to train at a different school but would still like to complete a school-based teacher training course that leads to QTS, then please view our School-Based course.

    What will you learn?

Learning from both teaching staff within SCITT and CCCU academics, this pathway will give you opportunities to develop a nuanced understanding of how research, policy, and practice inform each other. Successful completion of your training will allow you to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Whilst working with experienced academics from CCCU, you will use insights from your school-based practice, research, and wider reading, and work with your peers to develop your understanding of teaching and learning using a holistic and critical approach. This will prepare you for reflective practice, whilst giving you the opportunity to meet the teachers' standards.

What's more, you may opt to complete the optional PGCE, which will allow you to undertake academic study and write assignments. There are additional taught sessions and tutorials led by the University to support you.

This is a cross-phase course which means that it is open to those preparing to teach in both primary and secondary phases.

    98%
of our students that completed a QTS course were in employment or further study 15 months after finishing their course.

    How you’ll learn

On the PGCE SCITT course there are a number of taught sessions led by Canterbury Christ Church University. The teaching on these days will be a mixture of lecture, seminar and workshop activities. You will receive a full calendar for the year at the start of the course. This calendar will be specific to Canterbury Christ Church University's work with your SCITT.

There is a high level of individual support for learning offered on this course through tutorials with Canterbury Christ Church University tutors and 1:1 support. Self-study is also an important element of this PGCE SCITT course.

At all times you will be required to relate learning from taught sessions and your own reading to your own teaching practice.

The PGCE SCITT requires you to synthesise different perspectives on teaching that you encounter, make links between them and make informed, reasoned decisions about what to take forward into your own practice and what not to.

Students on the PGCE SCITT pathway will submit assignments for each academic module, gaining Level 7 credits as you progress through the course. A range of assessment methods are used to help you evidence your knowledge, understanding and skills.

    Your future career
