Overview
Become a specialised mental health nurse with an MSc in Mental Health Nursing. Suitable for all students from any academic background, this Mental Health Nursing degree will equip you with the skills and knowledge to become a competent and compassionate nurse. On successful completion, you will be eligible to register with the NMC and practise as a registered Mental Health Nurse.
Taking a person-centred approach, this degree in Mental Health Nursing will prepare you be a critically aware, creative, and communicative nursing practitioner. The practical and dynamic nature of the course will allow you to build your confidence both in the community and the classroom.
This two year course focuses on both theory and practice, allowing you to practise what you have learned at University. You will complete various placements, working directly with people in a range of settings, including their home and community. Through this opportunity, you’ll gain a full understanding of how to care for different people as you implement a person-centred and informed approach.
What’s more, you will benefit from our simulation suite on campus, giving you the option to practise in a real-world simulated environment before embarking on your placements.

Entry requirements
For the MSc Nursing you will hold a Bachelor's degree with Honours at a 2:1 in any subject or a 2:2 in a health related subject, such as Biological Sciences, Psychology or Public Health.
You must also hold maths and English GCSE grade 4-9 (A-C) or Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent.
Prior to beginning the course you will need to have undertaken 750 hours of practice experience. This practical experience must be contemporary, undertaken in the last 5 years. You will then need to submit a Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) application portfolio of evidence that documents these 750 hours and includes a CV, record of application for Disclosure Barring Scheme (DBS) and occupational health clearance and a supporting statement reflecting how these experiences have prepared you to undertake the MSc Nursing. You will be supported in preparing this portfolio by a member of the MSc programme team. This portfolio will be assessed using a predefined criteria and once successfully completed you will be offered a firm place on the programme.

How you’ll learn
The MSc Nursing is a problem-based learning course (PBL). Working in groups or individually you will be provided with problems and directed towards tasks that will enable you to develop your knowledge and skills. You will also consider the issues presented in the module and through discussion, debate, and guided reading, critically examine your role as nurses.
This course uses a variety of teaching methods to support this including:
- lectures, which are attended by all students on the module at the same time,
- seminars, simulation, clinical supervision - where a smaller group of students are required to attend a specific session,
- Practical placements that provide a range of clinical experience related to your chosen pathway.

As well as participating in live sessions and group work, you are expected to undertake self-study and learn independently. Each 15 credit module normally has 33 directed learning hours and 117 hours of self-directed study. Therefore, it is important to plan your time to devote to the course and complete the module learning outcomes. This is essential for the attainment of masters level knowledge. The taught sessions will introduce you to concepts and theories through exemplars, it is your responsibility to build on this foundational knowledge with other examples and reflections on your practice.
Every student is allocated a named member of academic staff from their course of study, called a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT). Your PAT is there to provide you with academic support helping you to identify the academic skills you need to develop in order to succeed in your studies. The PAT monitors your engagement with your studies through the Student Engagement Dashboard. If you are a combined honours student, you will have one PAT and a named contact in your other course.

We use a variety of assessments so that you can showcase your full range of academic skills including multiple choice exam, written assignment, portfolio, case studies, group presentation and dissertation.

Enxtra funding for health students
NHS Learning Support Fund
Students on a nursing, midwifery and many allied health courses will be eligible to apply for an NHS Learning Support Fund of at least £5,000 a year to help with living costs. Eligible students may also be awarded additional funding up to £3,000 a year. This money will not need to be repaid.

Uniform (appropriate to the course) and a placement badge are provided free of charge at the start of the course. If you wish to replace any item of uniform or secure additional items of uniform during the course (e.g. because it has been damaged or no longer fits) then you must order and pay for this directly with the supplier. There are certain exceptions to this, for example if you become pregnant and require a maternity uniform. You will need to purchase suitable footwear for practice. NHS Trusts require shoes (not trainers) that meet health and safety requirements. Advice will be given by the lecturers on what to purchase after you have enrolled on your course.
