Entry requirements
To be eligible for this course, you will hold a Bachelor's degree with Honours at a 2:1 in any subject or a 2:2 in a health related subject, such as Biological Sciences, Psychology or Public Health.
You must also hold maths and English GCSE grade 4-9 (A-C) or Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent.
Practice experience
Prior to beginning the course you will need to have undertaken 750 hours of practice experience. This practical experience must be contemporary, undertaken in the last five years.
You will then need to submit a Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) application portfolio of evidence that documents these 750 hours and includes a CV, record of application for Disclosure Barring Scheme (DBS) and occupational health clearance, and a supporting statement reflecting how these experiences have prepared you to undertake the MSc Nursing.
You will be supported in preparing this portfolio by a member of the MSc programme team. This portfolio will be assessed using a predefined criteria and once successfully completed you will be offered a firm place on the programme.

How you’ll learn
The MSc Nursing is a problem-based learning course (PBL). Working in groups or individually you will be provided with problems and directed towards tasks that will enable you to develop your knowledge and skills. You will also consider the issues presented in the module and through discussion, debate, and guided reading, critically examine your role as nurses.
This course uses a variety of teaching methods to support this including:
- lectures, which are attended by all students on the module at the same time
- seminars, simulation, clinical supervision - where a smaller group of students are required to attend a specific session
- Practical placements that provide a range of clinical experience related to your chosen pathway.

As well as participating in live sessions and group work, you are expected to undertake self-study and learn independently. Each 15 credit module normally has 33 directed learning hours and 117 hours of self-directed study. Therefore, it is important to plan your time to devote to the course and complete the module learning outcomes. This is essential for the attainment of masters level knowledge. The taught sessions will introduce you to concepts and theories through exemplars, it is your responsibility to build on this foundational knowledge with other examples and reflections on your practice.
Every student is allocated a named member of academic staff from their course of study, called a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT). Your PAT is there to provide you with academic support helping you to identify the academic skills you need to develop in order to succeed in your studies. The PAT monitors your engagement with your studies through the Student Engagement Dashboard.
