    Begin your career in nursing with an MSc in Adult Nursing at Canterbury Christ Church University. This Master's degree in nursing is for graduates from any field of academic study, tailored towards teaching you the core practical and theoretical skills and knowledge needed for a career in Adult Nursing.

    On successful completion of the Master’s degree in Adult Nursing at CCCU, you will be eligible to register with the NMC and practise as a registered nurse.

    This practical and dynamic degree will enable you to become a critically aware, creative, competent nursing practitioner who practises person-centred care. On placements, which represent an important part of the course, you will work directly with adults experiencing changes to their physical and mental health and wellbeing in a variety of settings. These including their homes and within the community - including primary, secondary, and tertiary care settings.

    Undertaking simulated practice in our state-of-the-art facilities will also enable you to develop your clinical and communication skills in a controlled setting, preparing you for the real world as well as enabling reflection and improvement.

    You will also study nursing theory, including ethics and social justice, through to leadership and development. We have worked in partnership with service users and colleagues from practice to ensure our MSc Adult Nursing course puts service users at the centre of all we do and provides you with the best learning opportunity.

    Entry requirements

    For the MSc Nursing you will hold a Bachelor's degree with Honours at a 2:1 in any subject or a 2:2 in a health related subject, such as Biological Sciences, Psychology or Public Health.

    You must also hold maths and English GCSE grade 4-9 (A-C) or Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent.

    Prior to beginning the course you will need to have undertaken 750 hours of practice experience. This practical experience must be contemporary, undertaken in the last 5 years. You will then need to submit a Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) application portfolio of evidence that documents these 750 hours and includes a CV, record of application for Disclosure Barring Scheme (DBS) and occupational health clearance and a supporting statement reflecting how these experiences have prepared you to undertake the MSc Nursing. You will be supported in preparing this portfolio by a member of the MSc programme team. This portfolio will be assessed using a predefined criteria and once successfully completed you will be offered a firm place on the programme.

    How you’ll learn

    The MSc Nursing is a problem-based learning course (PBL). Working in groups or individually you will be provided with problems and directed towards tasks that will enable you to develop your knowledge and skills. You will also consider the issues presented in the module and through discussion, debate, and guided reading, critically examine your role as nurses.

    This course uses a variety of teaching methods to support this including:

    • lectures, which are attended by all students on the module at the same time
    • seminars, simulation, clinical supervision - where a smaller group of students are required to attend a specific session
    • Practical placements that provide a range of clinical experience related to your chosen pathway.

    Your tutors will be using a range of learning technologies to support your learning. To become more familiar with the use of these technologies see the LTE student knowledge base.

    As well as participating in live sessions and group work, you are expected to undertake self-study and learn independently. Each 15 credit module normally has 33 directed learning hours and 117 hours of self-directed study. Therefore, it is important to plan your time to devote to the course and complete the module learning outcomes. This is essential for the attainment of masters level knowledge. The taught sessions will introduce you to concepts and theories through exemplars, it is your responsibility to build on this foundational knowledge with other examples and reflections on your practice.

    Every student is allocated a named member of academic staff from their course of study, called a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT). Your PAT is there to provide you with academic support helping you to identify the academic skills you need to develop in order to succeed in your studies. The PAT monitors your engagement with your studies through the Student Engagement Dashboard

    We use a variety of assessments so that you can showcase your full range of academic skills including multiple choice exam, written assignment, portfolio, case studies, group presentation and dissertation.

    Successful completion of the MSc Nursing will make you eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a registered Adult Nurse. You could also choose to travel and explore the possibility of practising overseas.

    Additionally, on successful completion of the course there are opportunities within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Social Care to progress onto further postgraduate continuing professional development, including specialist education and PhD studies.
