6 reasons to love student life in Medway

Choosing where to study is an important decision. Here are some reasons why life in Medway offers everything a student needs...

1. Stay close to the Capital

Just 34 minutes away from London by train, Medway is a vibrant destination made up of three major towns – Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham.

Each town has its own train station and regular bus routes so getting around is really easy. Buy yourself a Railcard or student bus ticket and you'll save lots on travel too.

2. Discover the historic tales behind Medway’s landmarks

Once home to Charles Dickens, and the inspiration behind many of his novels, there is lots to discover about Medway’s history. The stunning Rochester Cathedral – where our students graduate – is the second oldest cathedral in England, and houses its very own library and collection of rare and historic artefacts.

3. Dates for your diary all year round

Each year, Medway hosts a number of festivals and events which you won’t want to miss. Whether it’s a throwback to Charles Dickens’ day or a night at Rochester Castle for a Craig David Re-e-wind, there really is something for everyone.

At Christmas, the grounds of Rochester Castle transform into a winter wonderland, with the arrival of the Rochester Christmas Market in late November. With tasty treats, unique gifts, live music and more to be enjoyed, there’s no shortage of festive cheer at this magical market.

4. From high street favourites to independent eateries

Dine by the waterfront at Chatham Maritime, where you will find plenty of tasty options, including Nando’s, Villagio and the American Diner, Friendly Phil’s. If you’re not sure what you fancy to eat, venture into Rochester high street for your pick of restaurants, bistros and cute cafes serving delicious cakes of all varieties.

5. Everything you need is right on your doorstep

Hop on a bus to the Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre where you will find high street favourites, such the The Body Shop, TK Maxx, New Look and more. During the week, the shopping centre opens until 8pm so you’ll have plenty of time to browse the shops and have a bite to eat in one of the many eateries.

If you're looking for a vintage find or just love to browse charity shops, Rochester high street boasts lots of unique second hand and vintage shops – perfect for those who love a bargain!

Bluewater shopping centre is just a bus or train ride away. At Bluewater not only will you find lots of shops offering student discount, but there's also a cinema, a huge choice of restaurants and even a trampoline park.

6. Get active in the local area

Gillingham is home to League One side Gillingham Football Club and Ice Hockey team, Invicta Dynamos. If you'd rather get involved than sit rink-side, you can pay a visit to the Planet Ice rink and test out your skating skills. Chatham is also home to a snowsports centre where you can go dry-slope skiing, snowboarding, tubing or tobogganing!

Medway offers plenty of green spaces and running trails. Every Saturday morning you can get your trainers on for a 5k Parkrun which takes place in the Great Lines Heritage Park in Gillingham. If you prefer to hop on the treadmill, there are also a number of gyms in the local area – many of which offer a student discount.
