Dr Soumya Manna

Principal Lecturer in Design Engineering & Research Supervisor

School of Engineering, Technology and Design

I am a Principal Lecturer in Design Engineering, Course Director of Biomedical Engineering and School Lead for Teaching and Learning at School of ETD.

I joined CCCU in 2019 as a Lecturer in Design Engineering and have recently been promoted to Principal Lecturer/Associate Professor. Prior to this, I served as an Assistant Professor and held various leadership roles in overseas higher education institutions for three years.

My current teaching focuses on modules in Healthcare Technology, Medical Devices, Mechatronics, Mathematics, and Robotics. Additionally, I contribute to teaching Assistive Robotics to medical students at Kent and Medway Medical School. I am also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK), recognized for my contributions to engineering education and pedagogical research. I have been in school leadership roles in quality management and student support such as course directorship of Biomedical Engineering, previous school lead in personal academic tutoring, school lead in teaching and learning and member of the faculty ethics review committee.

My research primarily focuses on the design of medical devices, such as wearable exoskeletons for assistance and rehabilitation, sensor deployment for gait analysis, telehealth solutions, and IoT-based biomedical applications. Following the completion of my PhD in Medical Robotics, I have engaged in interdisciplinary collaborative research on exoskeletons, online tele-neurorehabilitation portals, and haemorrhoids electrotherapy tools.

With over 40 research papers published in reputable conferences and journals, I also serve as a guest editor and reviewer for leading academic publications. I also contribute to quality control in Higher education UK where I serve as a course assessor, validation expert and examiner in other UK and international HEIs. I am also a member of the BioMedEng Association and a technical committee member of national and international conferences. I have also delivered lectures as an invited keynote speaker at several national and international conferences, faculty development programs, Medical Innovation Event etc. I have been a STEM ambassador since 2019 and have participated in more than 50 STEM activities to encourage students and promoting STEM courses.
