Mr Martin Southam

Senior Lecturer

School of Psychology and Life Sciences

I joined CCCU in 1999. I am now the course director of Sport & Exercise Psychology.

Prior to joining CCCU as a member of staff and MSc student, I studied here as an undergraduate from 1996. I have always been interested in sports and have played competitive hockey and football - I also like running.

Alongside lecturing, I have worked with numerous teams and individuals from an applied perspective.

I very much enjoy working with students to enhance the learning experience and have won teaching awards - the famed 'golden apple' as a result.

I enjoy watching sports and trying to bring examples of what we see in stadiums, pitches & on TV into the classroom.

Much of my teaching is focused on the psychology of sport, with a specialism in the social psychology aspects - the psychology of teams. I teach across all levels of the undergraduate courses.

I contribute to the undergraduate programmes in the areas of the social psychology of sport, individual psychology in sport performance and I supervise dissertation studies in these fields.

I recently won a 'Golden Apple' teaching award https://www.canterbury.ac.uk/social-and-applied-sciences/news/award-for-outstanding-member-of-staff.aspx

My research interests are related to staff/student collaboration in HE, and my teaching focus is team/social psychology of sport.

My research & knowledge exchange work is primarily in the area of performance psychology in sport, and I contribute to the workshop programme of SportsLab and have consulted with numerous athletes & clubs in Kent.

In recent times, I have worked with students in an effort to better understand and maximise the positive outcomes that come from student/staff collaboration in Higher Education settings.

I am an active sports person and regularly run (recreationally) both at home and abroad. I am a keen footballer and play hockey at a local club. I am a level 1 hockey coach and 1 star canoeist.

I am a passionate sports fan, and regularly attend varied sports events in the UK (including NFL, Football, Netball & Cricket fixtures), as well as in diverse places abroad including Australia (AFL), Germany (EuroHockey), Sweden (Ice Hockey) & the USA (Baseball).
