I am a Senior Lecturer in Journalism and member of the Enterprise Fellowship Programme, having previously spent 30 years in the national and regional media.

I teach on the BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism course, as well as previously on the Arts & Humanities Foundation Year, and have developed, evolved and modified much of the teaching.

I was winner of Christ Church Students’ Union Best Emergency Assessment in 2020 for work on adapting the Level 6 Newsdays module during the coronavirus pandemic.

I was awarded the University Certificate in Academic Practice in 2017 and received full Fellowship of Advance: HE in 2023.

I became part of the inaugural cohort for the university's new Enterprise Fellowship Programme in 2023.

My training has included, but is not restricted to:

  • Fundamentals of Knowledge Exchange
  • Innovation initiatives
  • Developing ‘sticky’ partnerships
  • Confident conversations around finance and budgeting
  • Public and community engagement
  • Working with the third sector
  • Networking skills
  • Commercialisation and IP
  • Salesforce B2B
  • Writing Innovate UK proposals
  • Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

As part of my work on this programme, I am also designing numerous media-related short courses.

I moved into academia in 2015, as a sessional at the University of East London, whilst still working as a journalist, before joining Canterbury Christ Church University two years later. I started my career as a trainee journalist on my hometown paper before joining the KM Group where I held a variety of roles culminating in becoming Group Sports Editor. During my time with the company, I was involved in launching new newspapers and played a key editorial role in the creation and early development of the KentOnline website. I was a staff member of the Telegraph, where I was involved in coverage of the world’s biggest sporting events, including the football World Cup and Olympics Games. I also worked at the Times and Guardian newspapers and websites during the 2010s.

My areas of research interest include sports journalism in the digital age, the rise of citizen sports journalism and the future of local journalism.

I am a member of:

  • Advance: HE (full)
  • The Sports Journalists’ Association of Great Britain
  • The Association for Journalism in Education

I was previously a member of the judging panel for the Kent Press & Broadcast Awards.
