Academic wins Most Innovative Teacher of the Year award

29 November 2019

Tom Delahunt, Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work, has won the Most Innovative Teacher of the Year award at the Times Higher Education (THE) awards, held last night (28 November).

This award recognises the academic whose imagination and passion has transformed a course and inspired students.

The THE awards have been described as the ‘Oscars of UK Higher Education’ and Tom was shortlisted for his blog, A poetic nursing heart, his poetry symposia and the use of poetry in nurse education, which have had a transformational effect on colleagues and students both personally and professionally. His blog has had more than 2,000 hits with international reach and the judges praised Tom’s transformative use of poetry in nursing education.

Reacting to his achievement, Tom said: “This award is just what the #poeticnursingheart needs. A small opening for further research into the value of poetry in higher education. The value of Christ Church is the inclusivity and widening participation ethos. The blog and community of people I call my friends are all focused on blending the learning environment. We must build on this award as a university to embed the philosophy of learning for all in a open and loving learning culture."
