Innovation Hub Welcomes Range of Guest Speakers

Canterbury Christ Church University's Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) held it's 4th Innovation Hub meeting on the 16th June 2016 at Darent Valley Hospital (DVH).

The meeting was well attended and took place in the post graduate, Philip Farrant education centre at DVH. In all about 80 delegates both from the hospital and the university attended. The purpose of this meeting was to facilitate medical innovation in the region and to help overcome the potential hurdles.

Professor Sriprasad welcomed the delegates and impressed upon them the importance of the university, industry and the NHS hospitals coming together to make progress in innovation. Debra Teasdale, Dean of the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, then spoke on the role of the Institute of Medical Sciences and its contribution to innovation.

Professor Kanegaonkar, newly appointed Professor of Medical Innovation within the IMS explained the various activities of the hub so far and the forthcoming important developments. Ms Amanda Hutson and Ms Emma Hodge also attended the event, and discussed the ways to patent research and innovation and the help that the university can provide at every stage to the innovator.

Mr Mike Perks the managing Director of Karl Storz (UK) spoke on industry support for innovation and to develop products, and Professor Anan Shetty gave a great talk on the Stem Cell and Advanced Bio-Engineering Laboratory at the Institute of Medical Sciences. He explained his fascinating innovation of the use of stem cells in non-healing fractures and other areas.

The keynote lecture was given by Dr Muhammed Nasir, the inventor of iGel laryngeal mask. He enthralled the audience with an educative and witty lecture describing the trials and tribulations associated in establishing a new device. The iGel laryngeal masks are now used in 110 countries around the world!

Ms Susan Acott, the CEO of DVH in her valedictory address thanked the delegates for their participation and stressed the importance of innovation to patient care. Ms Acott also assured the continued support of the hospital for innovation and research.
