The main Library in Canterbury is based in Augustine House, a state-of-the-art building. Located near the city centre, Augustine House is just ten minutes' walk from North Holmes Road.

The Library covers four floors, is serviced by three lifts and offers a range of learning spaces to support collaborative learning, group study work or quiet individual study. There are also six group study rooms, which students can book online.

There are PCs throughout the building, plus i-Borrow laptops which you can use anywhere in Augustine House. The building is fully wi-fi enabled. Using the latest technology, it offers fast download and upload speeds. We also have Quick Access PCs in the ground floor atrium for quick tasks like checking emails or printing. These will automatically log you out after 15 minutes.

Our University welcomes people from all faiths as well as those with none.

We have made provision for a faith space in Augustine House for the use of students and staff. This is located just outside the security gates at the side entrance of the building.

It is a space for prayer, meditation and reflection and it is not designated for workshops, society events, or staff meetings. Please respect your fellow users and keep silence. Be aware of the religious sensibilities of others, which may be very different to your own.

Availability and access

Faith Space 1 (Ahg.28a)

Bookable for communal prayers or worship by any group, of up to 10 people. All requests for booking must be made at least seven days in advance to chaplaincy@canterbury.ac.uk.

Faith Space 2 (Ahg.26e)

Booked 12:00 - 13:00 and 17:00-18:00 on most days for muslim prayer (the time will vary depending on the time of year). A shoe rack is provided.

  • All bookings are listed and displayed outside the room.
  • On occasions, all or part of this space, may be unavailable during major events in Augustine Hall and Arrivals weekend. Make sure that you are aware of the other facilities available at the University (see below).

Guidelines for use

  • Make sure that the space (including toilet and shower areas) is clean and tidy when you leave
  • Do not place any posters, leaflets and flyers without prior permission of the Chaplaincy
  • When the space is booked for communal worship or religious activities, artefacts may be brought in with permission of the Chaplaincy
  • If you move any furniture or equipment, return it to its original location before you leave
  • Do not leave any personal belongings unattended
  • Do not light candles or burn incense
  • Do not consume food or drink (other than water)

Any failure to follow this guidance, misuse or damage to this space, may result in a ban from further use.

Other facilities at the University

  • Chapel of Christ in Majesty (Anselm)
  • Eastern Religions prayer room (Ag31)
  • Muslim prayer room (Fg02/03/04 and Fg05)
  • Chaplaincy quiet room
  • Faith spaces are also provided at the Medway campus in both Rowan Williams court (prayer/quiet room) and in the Pilkington building.

If you would like somewhere safe to keep your property whilst working in Augustine House, you can use one of the lockers provided.

There are 64 lockers located on the ground floor, just outside the security gates at the back and side entrances.

To ensure availability to all, the lockers are fitted with a release mechanism and will automatically open after 12 hours. You can return to your locker within this time to remove items or extend the use of the locker.

To use a locker:

  1. Open the locker and place your items inside. Close the door and engage the latch.
  2. Enter a  four-digit code of your choice. Two green lights will be displayed to confirm the code has been accepted.
  3. Re-enter your four-digit code. Four green lights will be displayed to confirm the locker is secure. Once secure, an intermittent red light will flash to signal the locker is in use.

To retrieve your items from the locker, enter your four-digit code, disengage the latch and open the door.

These instructions can be found on the inside of each locker.

The University cannot take responsibility for any lost items.

Accessible lockers for Library users with disabilities

Four lockers in Augustine House are designated for long-term use by users with disabilities or health issues.

If you need to use these lockers, please contact the Student Disability Service.

Anyone wishing to film or take photographs within Augustine House is required to seek permission.

As Augustine House is a study space for use by all staff and students, it is important that filming/photography activities do not impede silent study or cause any disruption to others using the library. Whilst we will try to accommodate such requests wherever possible, some requests may be refused or modified to meet with operational needs.

Please contact the Corporate Communications team and give a minimum of two weeks' notice, prior to the potential filming date. We look forward to working with you to accommodate your needs and to help make your filming a success
