Why go to university? Find out why you should apply for university this year and discover your future.

Whether your passion lies in the sciences or performing arts, gaining a degree will enable you to explore your interests whilst getting you ready for employment.

At CCCU, we prioritise employability and getting our students work-ready for when they graduate: that's why we're in the top 20 for students in employment.

There are so many reasons why university is the best choice to make. Let’s take a look at five reasons why going to university is a great idea.

1. Enhance your career prospects

Whatever subject you study, you will generally become more employable than those who haven’t been to university because you’ll learn skills that can be applied in any industry: critical thinking, analysis, creativity, and more.

Whether you studied Theatre and Performance or Chemical Engineering, you will graduate with specialist knowledge in your subject, as well as skills ready for the workforce, such as time management, leadership, and teamwork.

We recognise that, nowadays, graduating with just a degree isn’t going to cut it. Showing future employers that you have additional experience on your CV will heighten your career prospects even more.

There are many opportunities for you to enhance your career prospects at university through things like volunteering and placement years. You will leave a well-rounded graduate with a degree-level qualification, relevant experience, and employability skills.

2. Develop as a person

University offers you the chance to develop your independence, as well as your academic knowledge.

When your start university, you might not even know how to make a simple spag bol, but after three years of living on your own, you’ll become confident in utilising the life skills you’ve acquired throughout your studies.

What’s more, you’ll make lifelong friends and will be able to live with them if you wish to.

Once you graduate, you’ll be ready to kickstart your career with the comfort of knowing that you have the independence and resilience needed for you to thrive.

And if you’re struggling with issues such as your finances or mental health, there will be student support services that will be on hand to help you, free of charge.

3. Experience the student life

Experiencing the student life can’t happen if you’re not at uni! Living with your friends, partying, studying together – there’s nothing that can compare to it.

Even if you decide to live at home, you’ll still be able to join in in the social events that are constantly happening around university.

What’s more, you’ll have the opportunity to focus on something that you’re passionate about. Whether you want to start a community greenhouse, like what Archie is doing, or you want to start a new society at the SU, you can do so at CCCU.

You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to meet new, like-minded people who have similar, or different, interests to you.

Getting out of your comfort zone and meeting new people will develop you as a person as you learn from others in a safe and supportive environment.

4. Explore a subject that you’re passionate about

It’s important that you choose a subject that you’re passionate about because you’ll be studying it for three years. Whether you want to delve into cyber security or you have a deep interest in History, you’ll be able to explore your chosen subject in depth.

Surrounded by lecturers who are experts in their field, you’ll learn from academics who are specialists and/or who have ample industry experience. Many of our academics undertake research across numerous subjects, which you may be able to get involved in.

There’s nothing quite like getting lost in a subject that you love – and you can do this at university.

5. Benefit from opportunities that university offers

University isn’t just about getting a degree. There’s a lot of things available to you as a student that aren’t always available outside of university.

For example, whilst at CCCU, you can:

  • Take a year in industry to gain first-hand work experience (depending on your subject).
  • Volunteer and mentor other students through our peer mentor scheme.
  • Apply for scholarships and bursaries to help pay for you to attend events that will enhance your work experience.
  • Gain one-to-one mentorship from our Careers and Employability team.
  • Receive support from our student support services that are free of charge and available to you at any time.
  • Follow your passions and get involved with other areas of the University such as the Academy for Sustainable Futures and Black History 365.

Whatever you’re interested in, you will have the opportunity to indulge your passion at CCCU.

It’s true what they say – you’ll get out whatever you put in – so get involved in as much as you can and become a part of the CCCU community.

So, there we have it – five reasons why applying to university is the best decision you’ll make this year.
