ReCap Accessibility Statement

Accessibility statement for ReCap (https://cccu.yuja.com/)

ReCap is the name given by Canterbury Christ Church University to the product officially known as YuJa Enterprise Video Platform. We will use the term "ReCap" to refer to this product throughout this document.

ReCap is a lecture capture and media streaming solution that is a commercial product designed and developed by YuJa in accordance with internationally recognised Web Content Accessibility guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Level AA as well as US section 508 standards. The site is run jointly by Canterbury Christ Church University and YuJa. We want as many people as possible to use this site so within the ‘native’ ReCap interface* you will be able to

  • Zoom in up to 200% without text spilling off the screen
  • Navigate the site using just a keyboard
  • Listen to most of the site using a screenreader
  • View closed captions of video content†
  • Enable high contrast colours

* Please note that content uploaded to ReCap is created by a variety of users and technologies, and as such cannot be guaranteed to meet all of these requirements.

† Please note that closed captions are auto-generated and may not be fully accurate. If you rely upon accurate captions for your learning, please contact the Student Disability Service through the Support for Disabled Students website.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible is ReCap?

We know ReCap to be fully accessible to WCAG 2.0 standards. YuJa are working towards compliance with WCAG 2.1 standards, and expect to meet this during 2022.

What to do if you can't access parts of ReCap?

For any specific accessibility issues you may have with ReCap, please email recap@canterbury.ac.uk. We will consider your request and get back to you within 10 working days.

The Student Disability Service is available to offer support with issues related to accessibility. Information on their service can be found on the Support for Disabled Students website.

Technical information about ReCap's accessibility

Canterbury Christ Church University is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

ReCap is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed above.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with accessibility regulations

Content in ReCap is uploaded by a wide range of users. It is not possible to confirm that all content is fully accessible. We are undertaking a programme of staff development to ensure staff make their materials compliant.

Disproportionate Burden

Providing fully accurate captions on every video hosted within ReCap is considered by the University as exempt from the accessibility regulations on the grounds of disproportionate burden.

It is generally accepted that to fully caption a video takes roughly 5-10 times the duration of the video itself. With auto-generated captions already in place, we estimate that the time taken to update those captions to 100% accuracy is reduced to 3-5 times the duration of the video. The University undertakes around 30,000 hours of lecturing every year which is expected to be recorded (note that this does not include non-lecture classes such as seminars, workshops etc). To increase the accuracy of captions for all of these recordings would therefore take up to 150,000 hours of staff time every year. Additionally there is a variable amount (per module) of content recorded by staff outside of the classroom that would also need to be included on top of this figure.

YuJa report that their auto-captioning service provides up to 85% accuracy, and it is deemed that this would be sufficient in most cases. Where there is a specific need for more accuracy in captions, we will work in conjunction with our Student Disability Service to meet those individual needs.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Captions will not be provided on live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations. However, viewers watching recordings of these live video streams 48 hours after the stream has concluded will still receive auto-captions on these videos, as with all video provided by ReCap.

How we tested ReCap

We asked YuJa to provide information on how they test their product for accessibility compliance, and received the following response:

To ensure sustained compatibility, our Product Team has developed several internal automation tools, uses off-the-shelf tools such as WAVE, as well as, performs manual validation tests to confirm compliance with accessibility workflows. Further, we contract with an external, third-party accessibility auditor to ensure compliance. Please review our WCAG 2.1 compliance documentation.

As a result of this response, CCCU has not undertaken any extensive testing of the site ourselves. However, we are exploring resources to allow us to do this in the future.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

The University continues to work closely with YuJa to monitor accessibility and make improvements as required.

Content publishers are being required to undertake training to show them how to create accessible content. This should address issues with future in-accessible content being created, and help them to understand what changes need to be made to existing content to make it more accessible.
