80 Years On Powell and Pressburger’s A Canterbury Tale – 1944 and 2024

A Canterbury Tale remains significant and relevant. Its beautiful and poetic vision of Kent, and its record of life in Kent in 1943 as D-Day drew close are unique. In 2024 as in 1944 war in Europe, displacement and social change, the value of nature and of threatened landscapes and traditions and the role of history, myth and change are still shaping our lives. As Martin Scorsese has suggested:

"We are all formed by the landscape in which we grew up – it is our universe. The deep love Michael had for Kent is joyously expressed in his beautiful film A Canterbury Tale…"

Canterbury Festival 2024 19 October-2 November

Canterbury Christ Church University and Canterbury Archaeological Trust with Canterbury Festival 2024 celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Canterbury born Michael Powell and Hungarian born Emeric Pressburger’s internationally acclaimed 1944 film and its premiere in Canterbury with a series of events and exhibitions.
