Often studied as a stepping stone to a PhD, this course involves undertaking a research project and will include training in research methods relevant to your chosen discipline.
A Masters by Research is a good test to see whether you enjoy research before committing yourself to, and finding funding for, a full PhD.
It also offers useful training in research methods if you wish to work outside academia, but in an area which involves research.
