BA single honours (Top up) Physical Education and Physical Activity 2018/19

This course is designed for those with a relevant foundation degree and will give you the opportunity to gain further knowledge, skills and understanding to help you enhance your career in physical education while you work, enabling you to ‘earn and learn’.

Our links with external organisations including Kent Sport, the Kent School Games and various coaching companies, provide you with opportunities to gain practical experience in the delivery of events and competitions.

You’ll have access to an indoor sports hall with three multi-use rooms, a fitness suite with a comprehensive range of cardio-vascular and resistance equipment, a free-weights area, and a performance analysis room.

You will explore areas including:

  • physical education
  • physical activity
  • contemporary issues
  • health education.

The BA (Hons) Physical Education and Physical Activity qualification is designed for you if you have completed a relevant foundation degree and wish to continue with your studies and complete a BA degree. You will more than likely be involved with physical education, physical activities and coaching in mainstream and special schools, afterschool clubs, holiday schemes and clubs for children and young persons.There are now a wide range of adults supporting the delivery of physical education and physical activity. Therefore, this course is designed to provide you with the additional knowledge, skills and understanding to enhance and extend your practice.The degree would provide you with an excellent opportunity to complete a work­based higher education qualification. On successful completion of the course there are additional pathways available at Canterbury Christ Church University to train as a qualified teacher, primary, secondary, or to undertake Masters qualifications.

This course provides a blended learning experience of academic and work-related activities which allow you to consider real time situations and improve your practice accordingly. What better way to study and learn at the same time.

This course is suitable for you if you are contributing to physical education, physical activity and physical development within an early years settings, or physical education and physical activity in primary, secondary and special schools. You may also be a sports coach delivering PE and sport in schools and other educational or youth settings.

This is a one year, part-­time, work-­based course which enables you to gain a qualification whilst continuing to work. The course develops a critical and analytical knowledge and understanding of physical education and physical activity. It will also enhance and extend communication skills, competencies and skill for teachers, coaches and physical activity professionals involved with children and young persons. You will study six modules. Learning takes place in the workplace (10 hours a week) and at University 30 days per academic year, one day per week in line with school term dates.

During the contact sessions of each module there will be discussions of theoretical frameworks supporting content and application of these frameworks to different physical activities and learning environments. The time allocated to independent study will allow for further reading and planning how frameworks apply in the workplace. Meanwhile, the assigned work­based tasks will engage you in learning how principles and concepts operating across different physical activities and physical education settings are applied according to the needs of the learners.

The outline structure of the course achieves a balance between work­based learning and academic University­ based learning. It is designed to place significant value on students’ experience in the workplace, supported by part­time attendance at taught modules. The integrated nature of this makes it possible for the process to be seen as a higher education activity in its totality.

There is also the exciting opportunity to research your own topic area of interest within the Independent Study module. You will be supported within this research by a tutor from the team.

On this year long course, you will study the following modules:

Research Methods in Physical Education and Physical Activity

This module aims to introduce you to the epistemological underpinnings to qualitative and quantitative methods in the context of physical education and physical activity. It introduces you to key research concepts (qualitative, quantitative, triangulation) and provides a foundational knowledge base for the research methods process.

Contemporary Issues, Values and Perspectives in Physical Education and Physical Activity

This module aims to introduce you to a range of contemporary issues that apply to physical education and physical activity settings. It aims to engage you in reflection on the contributions of physical education and physical activity to wider society through a range of cultural, political, professional and personal lenses.

Physical Education, Physical Activity and School Sport

The module aims to enable you to develop and apply advanced subject knowledge, skills, application and understanding in the range of practical activities in relation to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and the National Curriculum for Physical Education. You will develop a conceptual understanding across a range of physical activities and sports.

Physical Activity, Health Enhancing Physical Education

The module aims to enable you to consolidate your understanding of the contested nature of the aims of physical education and the rationale for health­enhancing physical activity (HEPA). This will be achieved through an in depth analysis of factors that underpin learning in physical education and HEPA, supported by studying contemporary research on policies.

Independent Inquiry

The module aims to develop and undertake a detailed small scale study of a particular aspect or issue related to physical education and physical activity. The individual study will also provide you with the opportunity to further develop your understanding and critical appreciation of research strategies, methods and academic writing.

Global Perspectives and Critical Cultural Pedagogies of Physical Education and Physical Activity

This module examines global perspectives of physical education and physical activity from the vantage of a critical cultural approach to pedagogy. The module reflects on the cultural norms that underpin global forms of physical education and physical activity, and examines how these norms shape our own cultural understandings and experiences within these practices.

We continually review and where appropriate, revise the range of modules on offer to reflect changes in the subject and ensure the best student experience. We will inform applicants of any changes to the course structure before enrolment.

Participants on the current courses are employed in schools or coaching environments while they study.

You will study six modules. For each module there will be a number of work­related tasks, additional readings and or online resources i.e. film clips and an assignment. Learning taking place in the workplace will be 10 hours a week. Learning at university will be spread over 30 days per academic year. This equates to one day per week.

Academic input

The staff who teach on the course are highly qualified and are either lecturers or senior lecturers. Currently, all staff are qualified PE teachers and/or have a range of coaching qualifications. All have significant experience in the delivery of physical education and physical activity. Delivery of the course is supplemented by guest speakers from a variety of backgrounds to provide additional input.

Surprising terms

The Work-Based Element (WBE) will be reviewed at the end of each module on a pass/fail basis.

Part 1 (2,400 words 60%)

You will produce a minimum of two to a maximum of four work-based research tasks (WBT).

2 WBT- 1,200 words each; 3 WBT-800 words each; 4 WBT-600 words each

These will be related to the module; and evidence of reflection on the work-based element.

You will be encouraged to construct your own WBT which could include the following:  

  • Observations during lessons at schools or in after school clubs
  • Reflective writing on teaching episodes
  • Teaching/coaching and the constructive evaluation of an aspect of physical activity and exercise in physical education
  • Critical analysis of physical education and physical activity units of work at the workplace
  • Evaluation of the impact of selected curriculum documents/ policies on physical education for young persons and children
  • Case study
  • Engagement in ethically sound small sized investigation and data collection techniques to investigate problematic issues stemming from the content of the module.

Part 2 (1,600 words 40%)

You can choose to complete (a) or (b).

a) Case Study: You will prepare a critical case study on a national policy that deals with a contemporary issue in the context of physical education and physical activity.

b) Critical essay: You will write a critical essay on a contemporary issue in physical education and physical activity.

The marks for parts one and two of the assignment will contribute to the overall assessment and classification of the degree.

Entry requirements

  • Applicants to the Foundation Degree in Physical Education and Physical Activity must normally have:

    a GCSE at grade C (or equivalent) in English Language;

    an 'A' Level or equivalent qualification in the specialist pathway

    ideally a minimum of 6 months experience (or equivalent) of teaching or supporting learners in an educational setting within the specialist pathway;

    be employed, or working voluntarily, for 10 hours / week in a relevant setting.

You will be required to have a recent satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. If you don't already have this you can apply for one through your organisation.
