The PGCE Psychology (14-19) is a nine month innovative and intensive course preparing graduates for the demands of teaching the age range.

Your PGCE in psychology will allow you to become an outstanding, inspiring educator who thinks critically about what this entails. You will be awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, enabling you to teach in schools and to provide a strong foundation for working in the lifelong learning sector, especially further education.

The course is organised in partnership with schools and further education colleges where you spend 24 out of the 36 weeks teaching.

You will hold a good Social Science degree (2:2 or above) in psychology, criminology or social sciences or a related degree with work experience.

We welcome applicants who have newly graduated and those with experience in public sector working, business and industry, particularly where this work has enhanced your knowledge, skills and understanding of the social sciences.

The course is particularly set up for postgraduates to gain experience teaching, learning and assessment both in a school setting and in college or sixth form environments.

On your PGCE 14-19 course here at Canterbury Christ Church University, you will study several University-based modules Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies and complete two placement-based modules.

The key feature of your PGCE is that all learning experiences and opportunities you will have on the course are designed to inform and complement each other. You will gain confidence in your ability to reflect on your own practical teaching experience and develop important skills such as critical self-reflection while improving your subject and curriculum knowledge in your subject.

Curriculum Studies
Curriculum Studies explores the link between your subject expertise and the teaching of business studies in the secondary and lifelong sectors. You are encouraged to continue to develop and enhance your subject knowledge so that you can utilise your subject expertise as a teacher/tutor within these two sectors.

You will gain confidence in your ability to reflect on your own practical teaching experience and develop important skills such as critical self-reflection while improving your subject knowledge to meet the demands of the various business specifications.

Professional Studies
Professional Studies is focused on exploring the nature of professionalism in teaching. In this module, you will consider the development of education ideologies to the present day and how they help explain the purpose and expectations of modern education. You will explore how your own ideas and values are brought to bear on teaching and how to find and use your own attributes to teach and inspire each other and your students.

There is a strong emphasis on the techniques of using e-learning, the nature of professionalism, and the characteristics of effective teachers. 

Enhanced Studies
Enhanced Studies is a period of study which encourages you to spend an extended period of research, study and teaching in an area of education that particularly interests you. You may choose to work in any recognised educational setting locally, nationally and internationally. Students have previously completed this module in countries such as Ghana, Thailand and Spain.

Professional Practice
Professional Practice are the periods when you are in your teaching placements. One will be in a secondary context and the other in another setting which may include colleges and independent schools.

Whilst undertaking your teaching placements, you will continue to be supported by your tutor and you placement subject mentors. You will work closely with your mentors to gain experiences and understanding of learning and teaching within your two placements and which will develop your professional knowledge and practice as a teacher/lecturer.

 

Your PGCE allows you to engage with the secondary and lifelong learning sectors, and could lead to opportunities to work in a wide range of contexts where learning and teaching is at the heart of a particular organisation.

Upon completion of your PGCE, you would complete your Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) year.  Our graduates are now working in school and colleges throughout the UK and abroad. You may decided to pursue a specialism such as Special Educational Needs.

You have the option to continue onto a Masters programme in Education, using the 60 Masters Level credits available on the PGCE.

Your University-based sessions are taught through a mix of seminars, workshops and peer teaching as there is an emphasis placed upon informed discussion and debate and knowledge exchange.

During your two Professional Practice teaching placements, you will be working closely with and supported by teachers/lecturers and assigned to a designated Curriculum Mentor to oversee your developmental needs and progress.

Your University-based modules (Curriculum, Professional and Enhanced Studies) are assessed through small-scale research assignments of 4,000 words each and offer you the opportunity to gain 20 Masters level credits in each of these modules. 

Both of your Professional Practice placements are formatively and then summatively assessed. Evidence can include the teaching files you have created, your reflective learning journal, and regular lesson observations by the teachers/lecturers you work with on a day-to-day basis.

Entry requirements

  • A good honours degree (2:2 or above) in a subject related to psychology, or in some exceptional cases, an unrelated degree if you have worked in employment or activities related to psychology, English and maths at GCSE (grade C or above) or equivalent, and to have passed the Government's skills tests in literacy and numeracy.
  • A commitment to becoming the best teacher you can be, with a minimum of 10 days recent experience in a UK secondary school or further education college. If you cannot spend the full 10 days in an appropriate setting prior to application, we can still consider your application as long as you have spent five days in an appropriate setting. If you are successful in being offered a place on the course the additional five days would be a condition of your offer and would need to be undertaken prior to starting on the course.
