Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) German

Year of entry

Our SKE German courses are tailored to your individual subject knowledge needs, with the flexibility of studying for 8, 12, 16 or 20 weeks.

Courses are free for those eligible for funding (see 'Fees, Funding & Bursaries' section below).

The German Subject Knowledge Enhancement course aims, through a blend of self-directed learning and online tutorials, to:

  • refresh, consolidate and improve your subject knowledge;
  • develop your language and conversation skills;
  • practise vocabulary and grammar;
  • promote independent learning, improve meta-cognitive skills and develop your ability to identify and address your own learning needs.

The course is designed to meet your subject knowledge needs. Study is flexible and can fit around your lifestyle and commitments.

The course is designed for:

  • Pre-Initial Teacher Training (ITT) applicants who need to strengthen their existing subject knowledge.
  • Serving teachers who need to strengthen their existing subject knowledge.
  • Anyone who would like to improve their subject knowledge.

All the SKE course content is accessed online.

  • The course starts with an initial test to help identify your language level, followed by an online induction. Throughout the course, you participate in the weekly online tutorials and work through the online language activities.  At the end of the course, you take the final test to measure your progress.
  • You are expected to spend a minimum average of 25 hours a week working on the course.

Successful completion of the course is measured through engagement with the course and progress in the course tests.

This is a non-credit bearing course.

Technical Requirements

You must have the following:

  • a desktop or laptop personal computer (Windows or Mac);
  • a reliable internet connection;
  • a headset with integral microphone and USB connection.

For further details: Full technical specifications (pdf)

Please note: If you do not have the equipment listed, you will need to purchase it as funding is not available for IT equipment.

The German Subject Knowledge Enhancement course blends self-directed online learning with live videoconferences. It is delivered using an online interactive system which has an excellent international reputation and uses adaptive software, releasing harder sessions when confidence is secured in sessions of parallel difficulty.

The course is taught up to Level C2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, but the focus is on language acquisition for everyday situations. Exercises in vocabulary and grammar are enhanced with voice recognition software. The software will enable you to adjust your accent and pronunciation in the context of everyday situations.

The weekly online live tutorials are scheduled in small groups with a tutor who is an experienced specialist in your study language and will help you expand your language skills.

Funding and Bursaries for Pre-ITT Applicants

For those students with a conditional ITT offer dependent upon completing an SKE course, the course fee is fully funded, subject to certain eligibility requirements.  Bursaries of £200 per week are also available to these students to help support them throughout the course.

We deal with funding and bursary requests as part of the application process.

For full information, read our SKE Funding and Bursary Guidance (pdf).

Serving Teachers

For serving teachers, funding must be secured via the Teaching School Alliances (TSA) who will then pay us direct for your access to the SKE materials.

Applicants who do not meet the pre-ITT funding criteria or who do not apply via a TSA will need to pay the tuition fee.

The course fees for 2017/18 are £200 per week.

  • 98% of our students feel they have made progress in their subject knowledge after completing the course.
  • 96% of students found the technology for the course easy to use.

  • 94% of students found the course guidance clear and easy to follow.

(According to the CCCU SKE Student Evaluation Survey)

I embarked on my teaching career by first undertaking the Subject Knowledge Enhancement course with Canterbury Christ Church University. I really felt that I had achieved something so great in such a short space of time (8 weeks). The online resources were plentiful and gave me scope to develop ideas further. As I was abroad for more than half of the course I found no problem in accessing the resources and tutorials. I would recommend the SKE at CCCU to anyone who is thinking of becoming a teacher. Thank you to all the lecturers, tutors and support staff for making such an enjoyable and informative course.

Louis, SKE student
