Principles and Practice (Research skills)
This module will enable you to develop greater understanding of the arts and cultural landscape in the UK and value of arts and culture to people and society. You will also develop criticality and reflectivity in relation to practice, research, reading and writing skills.
Here you will develop a project/programme or curator role within a contemporary arts, museum or heritage context. You will be supported in setting up a placement and guided through the experiences that are to be undertaken whilst in the placement context. The complexities of contexts and structures including the principles and methodologies of project management in the context of arts and cultural management will be examined. All elements of project/programme/curating from planning through to execution, including building and sustaining a critical path, overseeing budgets and team management.
Curatorial 1: Visual Arts /Gallery
This module gives you an understanding of arts organisations and their varied approaches to curating. It will give you confidence to devise, design and develop your own exhibition concept. You will acquire a working knowledge of the planning process, preparing you for curating as a career pathway.
Performance Programming 1: Multidisciplinary work and Collaborative Practice
This module is to give you an understanding of performing in venues, festivals and arts organisations and their varied approaches to programming performing arts work. It will give you confidence to devise, design and develop your own performance/performative work and equip you with the skills needed to programme a season/festival.
Spaces and Places 1
You will develop understandings of the relationships between the arts, practices of community engagement and theoretical perspectives on cultural geographies and the politics of place. Histories of community arts practice, contemporary policies of place-making, cultural tourism and audience development will be explored. You will develop a project proposal that draws on case studies and theory to set out a plan of work for regeneration through the arts within a specified community. The proposal will include a business plan and funding model.
Here you will gain greater understanding of contemporary contexts and practices of cultural leadership. You will explore innovative work in the arts, nationally and in the region, that demonstrate the creativity required to navigate austerity economies will be explored.
The main emphasis of this module is the student experience in a context undertaking a placement. Preparation in relation to the reflective learning log/diary/blog, evaluation and target setting will be undertaken. You will have access to an on-line community whilst on placement. Students may propose their own placement setting or take advantage of one of the many placement partner institutions we have on offer in Canterbury, London and the South East region.
Curatorial 2: Museums/Heritage
This module examines the diverse field of museum studies and how this relates to the range of activities that make up contemporary museum and gallery practice. Shifting the focus from storerooms to galleries, the module will consider notions of collections and ownership along with issues of display and interpretation. The module will draw on complementary theoretical approaches from both historical and artistic perspectives.
Performance Programming 2: Site-specific and Collaborative Practice
This module develops an understanding of performance in non-traditional spaces and examines organisations that programme or commission this genre of work. It gives an overview of best practice in all aspects of collaborative performance making outside of theatrical venues largely known as Site Specific work including site sensitive, performance installation, outdoor and happenings. It will give you confidence to devise, design and develop performance/ performative work and what is needed to programme a season or festival of Site Specific performance art.
Spaces and Places 2: Performance Technologies
Here you will explore the potential uses of technologies in and for performance and the influences of performance as a tool for innovation in technological design. Spatiality, embodiment, environmental, audience experience, and participatory performance will be examined. The module seeks to analyse the interaction between artistic endeavour and the technological processes which can assist and inform the creation of arts activity. In doing so, the module will develop awareness of the usability and contribution that new digital media platforms can offer the contemporary practitioner in this field.
Individual Study- The Reflective Researcher
Here you can examine in detail a selected and approved area of interest in arts and cultural management. You will pursue individual research under supervision and develop transferable skills to address complex issues and think critically about your chosen subject. Special emphasis is placed on original thinking, planning and implementing strategies and methodologies at a professional level. Above all the aim of this module is to enable you to apply research methodology and stimulate your own work – practical and/or written. Please note this module is introduced in term 2 where you write the proposal but then runs in the form of individual tutorials in term 3.
The main emphasis of this module is on you reflecting critically on the experience of your placement. Preparation in relation to the reflective learning log/diary/blog and making theory-practice connections will be undertaken.
