Please use the following information when dealing with an emergency situation at Canterbury Christ Church University.
Emergency Services can be contacted by dialling 9-999 on any internal University phone or 999 or 112 using a mobile phone.
When summoning the emergency services, it is vital they are given clear directions to the location of the incident. It is also imperative that CCCU Security is informed whenever the emergency services are called (see phone numbers below) and the exact details and location of the incident also relayed. They will then be able to respond promptly to the location to provide assistance, liaise with and direct the emergency services when they arrive to the campus or relevant building.
In the unlikely event of an accident or incident occurring on campus during your visit, in the first instance please report this to your host. If your host happens to be unavailable, then please report the incident to Security or any other member of staff. The incident will be logged on the University incident management system for further review by the Health and Safety department.
Contact the relevant emergency number to request first aid assistance as indicated on signage within the building (see example below) or refer to the Emergency Contact numbers in the table below. Give the precise location where the incident has occurred.
If you are a student or staff member and have downloaded the free SafeZone app, Security can be alerted for urgent assistance, first aid or any other emergency on campus via your mobile phone, university desktop PC or laptop.

In the event of a fire, please follow the evacuation procedure as per the below. Evacuation procedures and maps can be found as PDF downloads on this page.
Consult the Fire Action Notices which will be found at various locations such as at exits, in corridors, at doors leading to staircases and at fire alarm call points. Locate the nearest fire alarm call point.
The safe evacuation of all staff, students and visitors is the responsibility of the University. This section details specific requirements for anyone who may require assistance to perceive a fire alarm signal or need support in building evacuation.
Safe evacuation procedures for persons that require assistance must be pre-planned, identify the needs of the individual and make proper arrangements for their support.
Written instructions and, where necessary, training, are essential in ensuring suitable procedures are followed and that relevant members of staff and/or students are aware of the existence of such procedures.
The record of arrangements for personal evacuation for students and staff will be a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP). A PEEP should be produced with the active participation of the affected person and must be specific to the individual’s needs and location/s.
Whether you are a new starter or an existing staff member with a new condition which may impact on your safe evacuation, please complete the PEEP questionnaire and send it to the University Health and Safety Department. Your line manager will support you in the practical implementation of the PEEP.
If you are a student and require a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP), whether you are commencing or continuing your studies, please contact the Disability Team.
The purpose of a GEEP is to ensure that appropriate procedures have been considered for visitors to the University that may require assistance in an evacuation or emergency. GEEPs have been produced for all campuses and buildings, including accommodation, where visitors who may require some form of assistance are likely to be in attendance. GEEPs consist of evacuation procedures and specific arrangements for assisting evacuation including emergency escape routes, details and locations of refuge points and evacuation chairs (if relevant), persons designated to assist and other useful information.
All visitors to the University are to follow the Visitor Guidance.
University staff hosting any visitor on campus must complete the Visitor Register Form. They must also provide visitors with information on the Emergency Procedures prior to their visit and remind them of these requirements when they arrive to the campus.
Hosts should also discuss with their visitor, any additional assistance that may be required, for example, specific arrangements needed to ensure the visitor is safely able to evacuate a building, prior to their arrival and to ensure this is put in place during their visit. Information on arrangements for any visitor who may require some form of assistance to safely evacuate are detailed in the GEEPs. An external event booker, must also ensure this information is communicated and managed for any of their guests for whom this would apply.
Hosts can refer to the GEEPs for relevant buildings through the Downloads section which can be shared with their visitor prior to their arrival. They must also be briefed on the arrangements specific to their location when they arrive to the campus.
If a visitor wishes to discuss any concerns having read the applicable GEEP, then they are encouraged to contact their host who will be able to supply or source more details.
