Professor develops radio drama for the BBC

Robert Beckford, Professor of Theology and Culture in the African Diaspora at Canterbury Christ Church University, has developed a four-part drama, Jesus Piece, for BBC iPlayer and BBC local radio stations.

Starring Jazz artist, Soweto Kinch, and developed in collaboration with the writer Sarah Chukwudebe, the drama tells the story of a Pentecostal minister who inadvertently becomes a detective, after he was falsely accused of a murder. To prove his innocence, he uses his charisma and Pentecostal spirituality to find the trail to the real killer. However, the story takes a twist when his powers fail to work under certain conditions.

The project, stemming from Professor Beckford’s idea in 2013, aims to showcase theology through the arts and inscribe themes from liberation theology into audio culture. The series is available for download on the BBC website.
