John and Peggy Hayes Canterbury Award 2016

Canterbury Archaeological Trust is the winner of this year’s John and Peggy Hayes Canterbury Award. Paul Bennett, Director of the Trust and Visiting Professor at Canterbury Christ Church University, received the award from the Lord Mayor, George Metcalfe, at the Sidney Cooper Gallery on Wednesday 19th October.

The award is made in recognition of the Trust’s engagement with the local community through an exhibition at the Beaney earlier this year, and for the website and the many talks, walks and research publications the Trust has produced, as well as all of its work on archaeological digs and reports.

The award commemorates John Hayes, who was head of History at Canterbury Christ Church College (now University) until his death in 1980, and his wife Peggy, who died in 2011. John and Peggy were great supporters of local History and Peggy initiated the prize in John’s memory. It is presented annually for the best work on the History of Canterbury.

Professor Jackie Eales, Chair of the awarding committee, said that:

The committee is delighted to make the award to CAT in this its fortieth anniversary year. This award acknowledges the important role that the Trust and its staff play in the life of the City. We would also like to thank the Lord Mayor for joining us to make the award.
