Akosua Boakye awarded British Empire Medal

Akosua Boakye awarded British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours.

Akosua Boakye, BEM a Sessional Lecturer in the School of Music and Performing Arts, has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours.

Akosua, who is also a PhD student at the University researching Ghanaian Dance Culture and tradition through dance practice and pedagogy, was honoured for her services to dance.

Akosua is a previous recipient of the One Dance UK Trailblazer Fellowship, and was also nominated and selected for its dance teachers mentoring programme, championing the organisation’s work supporting dance artists. Her roles include Children’s Casting Coordinator for Disney's The Lion King, and Founder and Director of AkomaAsa Performing Arts Academy.

On social media, Akosua said: “To the dance sector, practitioners and students who have support me, I say a heartfelt thank you. It is a great boost to receive such an accolade for doing a job I truly love.”
