Knole is a Grade I listed historic house in Kent which is part-owned by the National Trust and has been open to the public for many years. The house is surrounded by a 1000-acre deer park with medieval origins.
It has exceptional survivals of early-modern furniture and silverware, and large collections of artworks and sculptures. The ground-floor rooms open up its origins as an archbishop’s palace, and the stunning staircases and galleries reveal its transformation in the sixteenth century. Knole has been the subject of a major series of investigations into its past since 2006, resulting in interesting revised interpretations and the opening of new spaces such as the Gatehouse Tower to visitors. This study day will review these investigations and interpretations, enabling participants to plan their own visit to Knole and appreciate how modern techniques and methods can be applied to ancient buildings and their interpretation to the public. The tutor herself carries out historical investigations for archaeological units and Historic England, and is a member of the Knole research group and a new showroom guide.
